Read-Along

So my friend, Terri and I are reading a story written in 1925. An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser. We both decided to read this together as it's on our book bucket lists.
Dust cover from 1926 edition

We will share our progress, thoughts, opinions and eventually our individual reviews. Anyone else interested in reading along with us, just leave Terri and I a message below. Since libraries and book stores are closed nationally due to COVID-19, you can find either the paperback or kindle edition on Amazon. There are many editions on Kindle, but all the same story. I actually found my kindle edition for only 45 cents!
Ok, Terri...let's get to it, my dear friend!

  2. Going to start chapter 4 at some point today & will probably read a few chapters throughout the day.

  3. I'm starting off with 10 pages/day to get me started. So I'm on page 40. And the chapters must be kind of short because I'm ready to start chapter 9.

    1. I ready to start chapter 9 as too.Seems
like, up to this point, that Clyde is doing well at the hotel, but I have a feeling something is about to happen. Not sure exactly what, per se, but definitely something is slowly brewing.
      What are your thoughts, Diva?

  4. I haven't done my daily reading on this book today yet -- I will read chapters 9 & 10.
But I'm like you. I'm happy for Clyde to better himself and kind of work himself (& his confidence) up in the world. But it really feels like we are being set up for something. Also, the title is "An American Tragedy" so I'm guessing not a lot of really good/happy stuff happens! :/

    1. Good morning Diva! I just finished chapter 11. I plan on doing much more reading today. Whereabouts are you?

    2. Ok, now I'm caught up...I think! On page 100.
I'm slowly...I mean slowly....starting to see Clyde's jealous side. Could that possibly be leading to something sinister down the road?
And Hortense....she's just a nasty little tease!

  5. I am on page 100! I've always been on the edge of my seat because I know that poor Clyde is going to do something stupid, like: spend all of his money on that stupid Hortense!!!
And, now, as you know, an awful thing has happened! I stopped on page 100, so I'm right in the middle of the big mess (I'm guessing, one of many in this book!). It's kind of weird stopping right on my 10-page daily assignment, but if I do that I'm more excited to get back to it the next day and see what has happened :)
I was nervous about them taking out that car, snow, ice, and a bunch of teenagers! Then they get in a big hurry to get back to town and work! A recipe for you know what.... !!

    1. 7:30pm here in Buffalo NY. I'll be starting Part 2, Chapter 1 in a little while. Adjusting the recliner and heating pad on my back as I've been getting back spasms the last few days.
ALOT HAPPENED IN THAT LAST CHAPTER, DIVA! Let me know when you're ready to discuss!!

  6. I'm ready!
    I just finished Part 2, Chapter 4 (I'm on P.131).
Yes, you're right! So much happened! But didn't you see it coming?! I was uncomfortable the whole time they were on their little outing. I just knew it couldn't have a happy ending.
Then to jump into Part 2 so suddenly. But it certainly calmed things down quickly. I'm feeling a little better now about what's happening for Clyde. But surely he won't be stupid through the whole book! I'd like to think some good things happen in his life -- but I just keep thinking about the title!!

  7. I'm on P. 180 (Part 2, Ch. 13) ---- that Clyde!!! I'll try not to give too much away because you may not be that far yet, but I don't think you'll be greatly surprised! He hasn't done anything Yet -- BUT HE'S GOING TO!! He just can't control his feelings around girls (in other words: Sex!). That's all he seems to think about. I can't tell if it's insecurity or loneliness. He, of course, doesn't have any friends, and he has no idea where he stands with his Griffiths relatives, so I'm sure he's confused. But I can see trouble ahead -- coming up fast!! No matter where you are reading right now, I'm sure you can see it coming too! :o
    ;)

  8. Sue, are you reading?! I'm about about Page 400! Oh my! It is not a happy book! I switched to listening (34.5 hrs!!!). And as sad as it all is, it's very listenable - just long!
Let me know how you're doing with it!

  9. Well, Sue, I hate to say it, but I just finished! Just as we thought, it's pretty sad, but interesting too. Let me know how you get along :)
